Wayne thinks outside the box to help council’s food box delivery service for the vulnerable.

Wayne Porter, from our UK Property Management Team, is always the first to raise his hand when it comes to helping those in need both inside and outside work. So, it came as no surprise when he stepped forward to help Solihull Council, when it told us it was struggling to source the cardboard boxes needed to deliver food supplies to elderly and vulnerable local people.

The Council is currently delivering more than 250 food boxes per week to local people who are self-isolating due to illness or shielding themselves and, finding boxes and bags in which to transport essential foodstuffs, was proving both costly and challenging.

In his role as a property manager, Wayne has a great working relationship with customers across our 22 logistics parks, in the UK. He quickly identified that two customers, RAJA UK (a packaging business based in Bedford) and Internet Fusion (an online retailer based in Kettering) were ideally placed to lend a hand.

RAJA UK was happy to extend its support and has donated hundreds of cardboard boxes directly to the Council for its food box delivery service to homes in the borough. Internet Fusion, has also donated hundreds of sustainable cardboard boxes to help the food delivery service continue and since then, other customers, including Amazon, have also stepped forward to help. Thanks also go to Optima Logistics for transporting boxes to the council’s distribution centre free of charge.

Of course, getting the food and boxes together is one thing; getting volunteers to pack and deliver these boxes is another challenge altogether. So, not wanting to leave things there, Wayne also volunteered to help pack the food boxes with essential fresh food items. He also responded to a further request for assistance by sourcing paper bags from Coventry-based MacFarlane Packaging and 5,000 were delivered to the Council last week.
