At Prologis, sustainability has been a business priority since 2008 when we decided that it was our mission to do our bit to help save the planet and since then, we’ve done just that.
This Earth Day, we want to look back at all the work we’ve done to help our natural world so far, whilst also laying the foundations for the years to come.
However, we didn’t get this far by ourselves. Over the past 14 years, we’ve been fortunate enough to work with like-minded organisations, whose shared commitment to our ecological welfare has helped us achieve amazing things.
Leading the way
As a logistics property company, the environmental impact of our developments is something we are constantly looking to reduce wherever possible. We were the first industrial property company in the UK to measure, reduce and mitigate carbon emissions in the structure and fabric of our buildings.
Our long-term commitment to reducing lifetime carbon emissions has been supported in no small part by our 14-year partnership with Planet Mark. This relationship has helped us to…
- Certify 71 developments, across 18.7 million sq. ft.
- Achieve a total reduction of 467,118 tCO₂e emissions
- Reach an average carbon reduction of 25% per development
Putting our planet first
We’re also dedicated to the protection of our rainforests and are keenly aware of their global environmental and social importance. That’s why we partnered with charity, Cool Earth, whose work with local communities helps to build better health, education and livelihoods for those who live there, together, whilst protecting millions of acres of rainforest.
Our work with Cool Earth has resulted in…
- 16,646 acres, the equivalent of 4 million trees, being protected
- 4.6 million tonnes of carbon being stored
- 100% of embodied carbon being mitigated
The more people in Peru and Papua New Guinea that Cool Earth works with, the more rainforest is saved. Each partner village helps to form a shield for 5 million acres, proving that it is the local people, not fences and patrols or governments and boardrooms that save forests.
Spreading the message
Delivering these challenges is only half the battle, and communicating our shared message is a massive part of our commitment. Over the past 14 years, we’ve also been able to reach over 4,000 school children local to our Prologis Parks through workshops and assemblies, working with Planet Mark and the Eden Project. Not only are these children aware of the realities we are facing, but they are also now more aware of the importance of sustainability and the role that they can play in protecting the planet.
Whilst there is still a lot of work to be done, it’s great to be able to reflect on the positive impact Prologis has been able to make since 2008.
